With the recent boost, the online casino industry is experiencing In the first half of 2020, the US online casinos’ GGR is expected to surpass the gross revenue declared for all of 2019. Whilst in 2019, the US online casino GGR was $500m, it is predicted that $1.4bn will be declared for the year 2020. The forced nationwide closures for land-based casinos contributed to the recent surge.

Whilst US landbased casinos have started to open their doors again, it is interesting to see whether the boost will be at the same pace or not.

 

NEW JERSEY ONLINE CASINOS

During the past few months, with major casino in Atlantic City closing their doors, online casinos experienced a significant boost (over $80mm) when compared to the same period last year. Golden Nugget which houses brands such as Betfair and SugarHouse reported a $291.1mm in revenue.

PENNSYLVANIA ONLINE CASINOS

At the point of writing this article, 10 from 13 of PA casinos were awarded online casino licensure and 8 of those have gone live. The list includes Parx, Hollywood, Rivers, Mt.Airy, Mohegan, Presque Isle, Valley Forge and Harrah’s. 

When comparing figures from May 2020 and June 2020, the majority of PA online casinos suffered losses as can be seen below:

BetRivers/ SugarHouse registered the highest Net Revenue generated from slots with a share of 36%. Whilst FanDuel registered the highest Net Revenue generated from online tableswith a share of 31%. Both BetRivers and FanDuel have been registering the highest revenue shares of the market for the past 3 months.

NOTABLE CHANGES IN STATE GAMBLING REGULATIONS

  • On July 15th, online casinos became legal in West Virginia with DraftKings being the first to launch. Similar to the WV sports betting framework, the West Virginia online casinos framework will have the 5 land-based casinos appointed as the primary licensees. This means that each brand can launch a maximum of 3 online casinos.
  • Sports Betting may soon be legal in Massachusetts with the legalisation of sports betting proposed in the $459 million economic development passed by the Massachusetts House.
